In 2019 Wakefield Council unanimously declared a Climate Emergency. WTF welcomed this and considers it vital that the actions and plans of the Council are monitored, supported and – wherever necessary – challenged to ensure that they reflect this Emergency.
Climate Change Action Plan
The development and adoption of a Climate Change Action Plan is a major, positive step taken by the Council, bolstered by the establishment of a Climate Change Team reporting to a Cabinet member, and a Climate Change Scrutiny Committee. JTW has met Councillors and staff on several occasions to discuss the Plan, and in particular our concerns about certain weakness, omissions and un-ambitions timelines. We have also submitted a detailed written consultation response.

Wakefield Local Plan 2036
The Council’s Local Plan sets out long-term aims and intentions for land use in the District. As such it has an absolutely vital role, on the location and type of housing development, areas for employment, transport, green spaces, etc.. It provides the parameters of Council actions but also a context and environment for development in the community, businesses. A number of JTW members submitted individual responses to the Plan consultation. JTW provided its own written submission which rejected the Plan as not fit for purpose and not ready for sending to the Secretary of State for approval.
